Picking a Domain Name - Helpful Hints
Sometimes choosing your domain name is the hardest part of the process. We offer these tips to help you ensure you get one that fits your business and that will make it easy for customers to find you.
- Stick with ".com" if you are a business and your name is available. The ".com" TLD is the standard and what many people will instinctively type in. Non-profits and other organizations will prefer to use ".org."
- Shorter is better. You want something folks can remember and type easily.
- Include the name of your business. This is somewhat obvious but if you domain reflects your company name, it is then easier for people to remember.
- Avoid hyphens. You can use them in domain names but it is usually best to avoid them.
- Protect your space by registering multiple domain names. We have seen it many times where a competitor sneaks and snatches a domain name very similiar to a company's. You might want to consider registering multiple versions of your name and using other TLDs (i.e. register the ".net" and ".org" versions too).
- Can you say it? Ideally you should easily be able to say your domain name to someone personally or on the phone and have them understand it immediately.
- Include keywords that describe your business. Not only does this help your customers associate the term with your company, it helps search engines find you.
